The patriotic spirit that was with us immediately following the horrific events of 9/11 has become increasingly threatened due to a phenomenon I have previously labeled the “cyanide of cynicism.”

With "I Pledge Allegiance," the first of two sensational new songs by Barry McGuire, comes in like the superman of patriotism to rescue America from its deleteriously poisoned state.   It is a desperately-needed  antidote, whose timing could not be better.   Based on my last encounter with Barry McGuire, he is still keenly aware of the social ills that are identified with boldness in the profound and prophetic, Eve of Destruction.  But this song indicates that even though we haven’t escaped the ongoing threat of such destruction, there is still plenty of room for optimism.

Unlike some of the jingoistic jingles out there, this song celebrates the nation, in a manner that is not superciliously haughty and bellicose in tone.  The song is catchy and the message is simple, effective and infectious.  It reminds us why Barry McGuire was once at the very top of the charts and that Barry McGuire, now in his sixties, is still at the top of his game.

So thank you, Barry, for delivering these two life jackets to Americans addicted to cynicism and to Americans addicted to nicotine. " I Pledge Allegiance," if taken to heart by every American, could save us from our cynical selves and restore our patriotism, our pride (the good kind), and our hope for a...

And if you ever want to be a special guest at another class I’m teaching, to sing your classics, to spread your message of hope, and, last, but not least, to once again sing backup on The Fire in Barry McGuire, my tribute to you, please have your people call my people and we’ll make it happen.

Thanks again.  You’re back, and you’re just the life saver this country needs.
