In The Shadow of the Moon (documentary) Interviews with the following: Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Gene Cernan, Mike Collins, Charlie Duke, Jim Lovell, John Young, Harrison Schmitt and Edgar Mitchell Director: David Sington THINKFilm Rating: PG Length: 115 minutes “Togetherness” is the word that typifies the time in history when America was preparing and then sending astronauts to walk on the moon. When “The Eagle has landed” was announced world-wide, it was, indeed a world-wide event. This is what is described by several astronauts recalling their time after a moon walk. Utilizing detailed footage of a rocket blasting off in slow motion, to Neil Armstrong taking that first step on the moon, we literally ride the flaming metal column with these men. Taking a famous Earthrise photograph, speeding in a rover at 17 mph on the moon and watching the end of the module burst into flames on re-entry are described by the men and they form a unique club of moonwalkers. Mike Collins was alone in the module while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the moon. Collins describes it as being peaceful, but the crew knew if they couldn’t connect the lander with the module, only one man would be going back home. We hear the reactions of astronauts as they receive the news of a fatal fire during a training exercise. Pure oxygen and a spark don’t mix. On the other hand, Apollo 11 with its successful moon landing was followed by other flights, and we know about the dangerous Apollo 13. One astronaut states that bringing those men home was probably the best flight ever. Concluding the film are comments about air pollution and how each city has its own pollution identity. The last moon flight was 1972. In The Shadow of the Moon was the winner of the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance Film festival 2007. Copyright 2007 Marie Asner
