Wicked
Wicked is a production that is stunningly visual and smartly performed. The narrative is well adapted for the stage and nothing is lost to those unfamiliar with the book. Granted there is always something magical about live theater but Wicked has its own elements that elevate it to even loftier heights. The legend begins with Glinda the good witch informing the Land of Oz that Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west, is dead via the hands of Dorothy. When one inhabitant questions the rumored friendship of the two witches Glenda tells the story from the beginning and we see the events that put each witch on their respective paths. An account quite different than the original Wizard of Oz tale we are all used to. Christina DeCicco is absolutely brilliant as the bubble riding, good witch. Glinda is a pampered and popular witch in training with a silver spoon complex. TO be likeable she has to be played with a hint of comedic gestures and delivery and Christina is flawless. Likewise her smart, intense nemesis Elphaba(Victoria Matlock) with green skin and zero social skills plays off these elements with wonderful timing. They make the most unlikely of friends and these differences weave nicely. As much as we appreciate fine acting this would not be much of a musical without the music. The songs are written with the same dynamics as the story line which help to build and move the plot with emotion. You find your self hurting for Elphaba and wanting her to grasp the happiness that is well within reach. If anything this is a lesson in acceptance and tolerance. How by shunning those different than ourselves we lose what can be beautiful and bonding relationships, and in the case of Elphaba leads to devastating results. Be encouraged that the lesson does not distract from the love and oft times hilarious moments of the production. Wicked is a perfect outing for the family though those under 12 may find it hard to follow the story with all of the musical numbers. Plus a couple of scenes involve witchcraft and loud scary elements that may frighten your tiny tots. Other than that this is a must see for anyone who has a passion for the arts and live theater. I am a movie fan to the core but nothing can ever touch the live stage. Wicked will be in Dallas through May 6th and you can check the website for dates in your city. I give it 4.5 out of 5 flying monkeys and will never look at the Wizard of Oz story the same way again. Grab the family and get Wicked. I'm Matt Mungle.
