Peacetime
Artist: Eddi Reader
Label: Compass Records
Length: 15 tracks / 56:04 min

Reader, a talented alto, is joined by several big-name Celtic musicians (e.g. flautist Michael McGoldrick) in an album that is evenly divided between traditional Scottish songs, slow ballads, and tracks that sound a bit like Sheryl Crow covering Jimmy Buffet.

Little fault is to be found with the execution, but Peacetime seems to lack musical ambition. For songs featuring as many as ten instrumentalists at once (not counting Reader’s vocals), one would expect either more complexity or a “fuller” sound than we get here.

Where the album stands out is in the lyrics, which tackle issues from the difficulty involved in deciding to turn one’s life around to whether anyone is listening to our prayers. If you like slow Scottish music with interesting lyrics, give this a listen.
