Blues
Heaven II
Artist: Glenn Kaiser Label: Grrr Records Length: 16 tracks / 74 mins The sharp of brain may notice from the title that this is a sequel to Blues Heaven, which showcased the very best of Kaiser's music. Given that this should then be the second best, the quality of this outstanding collection shows what a remarkable talent he has. One trick pony? Yes and no. Kaiser's musical passion is purely the blues, but within that genre he can play the lot – and on this disc he does. So you get him acoustic with dobro, playing lead, in the studio, live, solo and partnered (presumably with Darrell Mansfield). The new and very old get aired side-by-side here, with classics dotted among his originals. He serves up the Blind Willie Johnson song "Nobody's Fault But Mine," Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" and the less cool "This Little Light of Mine," which he gets away with, thanks to the playing quality on the collection as a whole. There are highlights everywhere and every trick in the blues canon seems to be employed at some point, but particularly in the live tracks. Strikingly special is "If I Leave Here Tomorrow," a nine-minute, gloriously slow blues, where he lets notes hang, snap and burn. Talking about where he comes from on one of his videos, he says, “It's about heart, it's about feeling, it's about truth”. This disc backs that up well and offers plenty for any blues fan to enjoy.
