Pressure the Hinges Artist: Haste the Day Label: Solid State Length: 12/48:21 I really, really want to like this band. Musically, I love everything they do - from Jason Barnes' guitar crunch to Devin Chaulk's drum fills to Michael Murphy's underrated staccato bass (and tuneful backup vocals). They mix rock with pop punk, and hardcore with emo to produce an engaging sound. Then the trademark downfall of every screamo band kicks in - the gutteral, forced, grunted/shouted Cookie Monster vocals. "The Minor Prophets" illustrates my position perfectly. Featuring great lead vocals and well written song with lyrics such as these: "Have you seen the sun? Or has the darkness dragged you further from your door? Take each other's hands. Look into the clouds. Such a beautiful song we sing. Finally finding our own way back home. Such a beautiful song we sing. Oh no, this is no time for excuses..." and then the next line kicks in and all you hear is "ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH". (OK, it's not that bad, but you get the point). "White Collar" is probably the most notable exception to this formula, in that the screamo vocals are recognizable throughout the verses, and the choruses feature the melodic power punk vocals a la Good Charlotte or All-American Rejects. Most of the songs here are of substance lyrically. The musicianship is excellent. But I can't get past the vocal style. It's the only thing holding me back from recommending this band to everyone I know. As it is, I knew plenty of listeners who will embrace this wholeheartedly. Brian A. Smith
