Apparitions of Melody: The Dead Letter Edition
Artist: Kids in the Way
Label: Flicker Records
Length: 13/50:12

Part hard rock, part screamo, and 100% talent, Kids in the Way present an updated version of their 2005 release Apparitions of Melody.   Featuring two new songs and a bonus DVD, the disc reveals KITW's further progression into the modern rock world.

"Fiction," already a radio hit is a somewhat repetitive '80's metal meets emo tune, featuring harmonies, and a growled/screamed chorus that detracts from the otherwise competent vocals by David Pelsue.   It deals with the way our lives become a fictional account of what they should be, once we detour from the path God has set forth for us.

"Even Snakes Have Hearts," inspired by The Passion of the Christ, depicts Christ's feelings at Judas' betrayal:

The lights are down and you're moving out in the dark
So kiss my face, commit yourself to treason
Now run away, you broke my heart…
The picture of Christ as Shepherd is shown in "Breaking the Legs of Sheep," recalling that in ancient times, shepherds sometimes were required to injure their sheep in order to have them stay in the area where they belonged.   It is a powerful, but painful object lesson, reminding the listener of what can be necessary at times for God to gain their attention.

"This Could Be The Song That Changes Your Heart" is a heartfelt ballad, a cry of frustration that serves as a modern psalm.   Much like David, the singer here depicts himself as being at the end of his rope, and not knowing where to go or what to do, and has been faced with the realization that only God can direct him from here.

The DVD contains footage of the band, interviews, and three videos, two of which are from the Flicker Rocks – Haarder compilation.  Regrettably, it does not feature a video for their remake of Tears for Fears' "Head Over Heels," a cover of which is also on the CD.

Having had only a passing knowledge of this band up until now, I have to see that Apparitions of Melody has garnered KITW a new fan.   While generally not a fan of screamo, the musicianship and the vocals more than make up for the occasional Cookie Monster effects.
