Rooms and Boxes
Artist: Blair Lott
Label: Indie
URL: www.myspace.com/blairlott
Time: 10 Tracks 40:33

If you take a look at the “influences” section of Blair Lott’s myspace page you will see a wide listing of some very famous names in rock and roll history, such as, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, and R.E.M. However, I was very surprised to see a couple of bands that weren’t on that list, particularly, The Vigilantes of Love,  Son Volt, and Bruce Springsteen.

Lott’s music is by far very rootsy from start to finish. The songs on Rooms and Boxes are punctuated with organ, fiddle, peddle steal, and bluesy rhythm guitar sections.

Basically we have some rockers (the title track, “The Promise,” “Clear,” “Already Left You (In My Mind)” and “A Fine Decision”) some ballads (“Dying In Time,” “Half The Way There,” and “Moving Sand”) as well as a couple of middle of the road roots songs.

If you are a fan of the aforementioned artists and bands you will find a lot here to enjoy. This young Atlanta based musician has definitely grown up listening to a large of amount of classic American blue-collar rock and roll!

This is a fine album but a short one, as Lott includes two versions of “The Promise.” This basically equals only nine songs, which is awfully short in these modern days of CD”s. Then again, this is an album that sounds like it could have come out in the 1970’s, so when viewed in that light it is easier to swallow.
