Unfaded
Artist: Kenny Meeks Label: Eb & Flo Length: 10/38:22 Longtime CCM vet returns with a new label and a new style on Unfaded. Rather than his straight ahead, '80's guitar rock approach that made him popular twenty years ago, Meeks takes an Eric Clapton/blues direction on his latest disc. At first, the novelty of it all seems refreshing - there are some talented musicians here, and the slide blues guitar is as good as anything Sonny Landreth has ever done. After awhile, though, most of the songs sound exactly alike. "Baby Don't Set Me Free," "Hollow Man" (featuring spot on backup vocals by Sandra McCracken), and the last five songs of the album all meet this description, imitating the Clapton Unplugged era. "Lonely Road " is a departure, somehow combining the vocals and sounds of Bob Dylan and Andy Griffith. "Wonderin' Where My Honey's Gone" is a Clapton/Landreth/John Mayer soundalike. Meeks has a worthy track record in the CCM world. His Eb & Flo debut, I'm afraid, will go largely unnoticed. Not because of the label, but because there is just isn't that much here that is memorable. It would make great background music in some hole in the wall restaurant in Mississippi, though. Brian A.
