self-titled EP]
Artist: Paper Route
Label: Indie

Paper Route has placed themselves within the perfect niche in Nashville– the blending of electronica with Americana.  With drum samples, keyboards, guitars, and acoustic instruments, their sound is catchy and unique.  The vocals drip mellow melodies, with a folky, southern feel, reminding a listener of Derek Webb.  Their sound lands somewhere between Caedman’s Call and Mute Math.

Their live show is equally as intriguing.  Complete with multiple keyboards, doubled microphones, samplers, and even a Jaymar piano, the stage is filled with various instruments.  Much like the collection of instruments, J.T., Chad, and Andy all bring different personalities, which makes for an interesting performance.  Live, their music reflects the cool, yet intense sound of ambient Americana.

While perspectives vary a bit, the group as a whole does not consider themselves part of what is known as CCM.  As J.T. puts it, this is largely because they “do not really understand what that is.”  Understandably so, the definition of “Christian music” has changed over the years, and from person to person, which makes a definition nearly impossible.  Paper Route wants to be accessible within the faith, as well as outside of the faith, however, and looks to other bands like Copeland as a model of how that should look.

Lyrically, however, Paper Route focused on redemption, hope, beauty, and love.  The message of Christ comes through, but not necessarily in a single song.  “We don’t go full circle in one song, but through the entirety of all of our songs, the message should be clear,” the band agrees.  Life does not wrap up quickly, easily to be summarized in a 3-minute song, and the band’s lyrics accurately reflect that.  Their lyrics are a journey, moving from one song to the next.

Fairly young, still in their first year of touring together, this band is bursting with potential.  It feels similar to when Switchfoot released their first album.  Hopefully, the Christian music scene will snatch them up and realize the gem that they are.

Their songs are available at Napster, iTunes, and PaperRouteOnline.com.
