Growin' in God
Artist: Quigley James
Label: 4th Tepee on the Right Music
Length: 12/37:47

Growin' in God is aimed at kids, and they will appreciate the effort.  Like most children's albums, there is a hit and miss effect here – "Get Dressed" is overlong for a song directed to pre-teens, and "My Best Friend" dumbs down a message that my seven-year-old daughter has no trouble understanding,

Still, there are some catchy songs here, done in a folky, "Mighty Wind" style.  "A Soldier's Song" is one of those tunes your kids will drive you nuts with, singing it over and over and over…   "Books of the Bible" is a useful song for memorization, while "Sin is a Yucky Thing" succumbs to the cheese factor that this genre affords.  Quigley's vocals are adequate, with the exception of "Jesus is the Bridge", which tries and falls short of Beach Boy-style harmonies.

Audiences comprised of kids and parents who like folk music will love this disc.  Anyone over twelve who leans toward rock will find it wanting…but tthat is a fair assessment of most children's albums.   James achieves exactly what he is trying to accomplish here – songs thaat will attract a young audience to learn more about God.
