John Reuben: Word of Mouth
Artist: John Reuben
Gotee Records 2006
Running Time: 44 minutes
10 Tracks

John Reuben certainly goes all the way in bringing his music to the public. On this CD are ten tracks. Arrangements go from the mix being awkward and you saying, “What was that he said?” (Track One and “Sing It Like You Mean It”) to the message coming through loud and clear on Track Two with “Trying Too Hard.” John Reuben uses hip-hop; funk and a bit of jazz on the ten arrangements with mixed results. “Focus” is out of focus with lyrics and is confusing as is Track Five, “Word Of Mouth.” “Curiosity” drones while “Cool The Underdog” as near as I could figure out, gives the message, “if you can’t change it, move on.”  On the other hand, “Miserable Exaggeration” has a muted jazz sound similar to the theme of television’s “Da Vinci’s Inquest.” This piece was a pleasant surprise as was “Good Evening” with a disco beat. To sum it up, “Word of Mouth” is hit and miss with five selections above average and the rest below. Too much experimentation can be lost on the listener.
