Shhh!
We’re in the Library
Artist: A Soup Named Stew Label: Independent Time: 31 tracks/77:25 min Chock full of songs about puke, I think we can safely file Shhh! We’re in the Library away with the other generic Praise & Worship discs we have purchased recently. Lines like “It really irks me when girls urp” belong with classics such as “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High” and “This is the Air I Breathe.” If only they used more suspended ninth chords! Okay, that first paragraph of the review is about as serious as A Soup Named Stew seem to take themselves. This project is as DIY as I have ever seen. It is available for free by clicking above and going to the guys’ website. The band recorded this project live at the EBRP Goodwood Library (hence the cool title). For a live recording, the band sounds nice & tight. The recording is crisp without too much of the mid-level that dooms so many bootlegs. The voices are strong, but not great. The playing is good. The drums (in a library?!?) are restrained & pleasant. The bass & guitars often settle into a nice groove. The lyrics either deal with: (a) microeconomics, deforestation, & the harmful impacts of light pollutionIf I told you that the band has been featured on the Dr. Demento show, I’m sure you can guess which one is the correct list. The lyrics are often clever, if a bit Juvenile as expected, and enjoyable. If you would typically enjoy the Dr. Demento show, you will enjoy this. Be forewarned, the band talks a LOT between songs. Go in with your heart set on something akin to Adam Sandler’s musical output and you will enjoy this goofy band and CD. Jonathan Nelson
