Love Like a Mule
Artist: Stoll Vaughan
Label: Shadowdog Records
Time: 40:00

Stoll Vaughan has toured with Journey and Def Leppard. I'm not sure why. He would have fit in better opening for Springsteen, or Robert Randolph.

I wouldn't call it country, I guess alt-country would be right. The lyrics range from spiritual to angsty. They are definitely unique. "There's a midget with a pitchfork carrying a sign saying he's well hung" "Man that Cares" is a great song of long distant relationships that may not be easy, but can last through some hard work.

The vocals are very soulful. Vaughan's voice has a Dylan-esque quality without seeming like he's trying to channel him.

Produced by Mike Wanchic (Mellancamp, Dylan, McCurtry) and a backing band that includes guitarist Carl Breomel and keyboardist Bo Koster from My Morning Jacket, bassist Jake Smith, drummer Devon Ashley from Over the Rhine.

This CD was a great experience. The songs are heartfelt and soulful. The music is real and energetic. Add this one to the collection.
