Kelley McRae
The Mercury Lounge
March 13th, 2008
New York City, New York

One of the best things about working in non-commercial radio is the exposure to independent artists. I get to hear and play artists who do not usually get radio airplay because they are not signed to a major label. Some of the albums released by these artists are as good as, if not better than anything you will hear on the airwaves today. Over the last few months I have been introduced to a number of indie artists based out of Brooklyn, New York. To say that these young men and women are good is a complete and utter understatement. They are putting out some of the best music I have ever heard.

On a recent March night I made the trek into New York City to The Mercury Lounge, one of the city's hottest listening rooms, to hear the Kelley McRae Band. Was it worth the trip, absolutely, without a doubt, yes. Kelley plays a unique blend of folk and sweet soul music that makes you feel warm on a cold winter's night. The packed house was also feeling the warmth that the band radiated from the stage. They cheered for their, make that our, musical heroes with each song. The sounds were soothing and enticing at the same time, a very provocative combination. The group consisted of Kelley McRae on guitar and lead vocals, Sarah Fullen on backing vocals, Evan Gregory on backing vocals and keyboards, Sean McClowry on bass and Dustin Rohrer on drums.

I don't know how long these five musicians have been playing together, but the ease with which they played showed years of experience. Kelley, Sarah and Evan are all top notch vocalists in their own right, but when they harmonize and trade vocal licks it is sheer musical magic. On top of all of this is the fact the Kelley is a first rate songwriter. The set list of original tunes consisted of:
"Nothing To Lose"
"Still Looking"
"Last Call Town"
"BQE"
"Till The next Blue Moon"
"Long Walk Home"
"Sparrow"
"High-rises In Brooklyn"
"Tomorrow"
"Hardest Thing To Do"
