The
Crossing - February 2009
Winter...cold...ice...sleet...snow...blah...blah...blah.
Have you ever met these people who say they actually like cold weather?
Do not trust these people. These people are nuts! You know who you are.
;-)
What a spectacular Super
Bowl! Maybe the best team won...maybe they didn’t. Guess we’ll never know.
;-) Okay, hats off to the Stealers, er Steelers! It WAS a tremendous game.
Incredible 4th quarter! And that half-time show wasn’t too shabby either.
Of course, it’s impossible to get the full essence of a Springsteen show
crammed into twelve minutes. But, they sure tried and it looked like they
were having fun!
February is well underway
and what that really means is that March is almost here. The days are getting
longer and the music is getting louder. The gear up to Summer can’t be
far off. The Oscars will soon be given out and the Grammies, well...is
it just me, or is Sir Paul McCartney sorely out of place at that show?
What in the wide world of sports is he doing there? Sure glad they showed
U2 perform right off the bat, I was able to soon after change the channel.
And, just for the record,
jury’s still out on the new U2 song.
Okay, new month, new music,

LYRICS of the MONTH:
A very rockin’ wall-of-sound
track...not sure if all the facts are correct. Was John Henry really not
able to read??? A crushing lament on the decay of the American auto industry.
“I watched the rain, it
settled in. We disappeared for days again.
Most of us were staying
in, lazy like the sky.
The letters flew across
the wire filtered through a million liars.
The whole world smelled
like burning tires the day John Henry died.
We knew about that big
machine that ran on human hope and steam.
Bets on John were far
between and mostly on the side.
We heard he put up quite
a fight. His hands and feet turned snowy white.
That hammer rang out
through the night the day John Henry died.
When John Henry was a
little bitty baby nobody ever taught him how to read.
But he knew the perfect
way to hold a hammer was the way the railroad baron held the deed.
It didn’t matter if he
won, if he lived, or if he’d run.
They changed the way
his job was done. Labor costs were high.
That new machine was
cheap as hell and only John would work as well,
So they left him laying
where he fell the day John Henry died.
John Henry was a steel-driving
bastard but John Henry was a bastard just the same.
An engine never thinks
about his daddy and an engine never needs to write its name.
So pack your bags, we’re
headed west and L.A. ain’t the place to rest.
You’ll need some sleep
to pass the test, so get some on the flight.
And say your prayers
John Henry Ford ‘cause we don’t need your work no more.
You should have known
the final score the day John Henry died.”
Jason Isbell (Drive-By Truckers),
the song “The Day John Henry Died” off the album The Dirty South
released in 2004.
See you in March.
