EP Artist: Generation Letter Label: Underground Grace Records Time: 5 tracks / 18:06 minutes Generation Letter is a youth-group friendly, Christ focused Rock band who mostly play heavy worship. Coming out of the Sovereign Grace movement, the band has a heavy theological focus, with deeper lyrics than many other worship bands. This EP's greatest success is also its greatest failure: its abundance of styles displays the band's creativity but also their lack of focus. Opening with a heavy alt-rock song bringing to mind groups like Emery (minus the screaming), the band turns on a time with the second tune "Blessed Assurance," a stereotypical CCM tune that is unfortunately derivative. After this, a decent ballad followed by a monster dirty rock track, "Blood and Water." Easily the strongest track here, its grit hits like a truck and the lyrics are earnest and emotive. This song is a complete surprise after the previous ones. The band closes up with the U2 inspired "Jesus My Glory." Five songs, and five different styles of music! There are a couple great tracks, a couple decent ones and one flat out awful one. The band has lots of talent and potential, they just need to focus. More heavy rock like "Blood and Water," and less derivative filler like "Blessed Assurance" should do the trick. Noah Salo
