This new release from Sydney, Australia's Hillsong Church, brings us huge, anthem like songs of praise and worship. The Hillsong phenomenon operates on the premise that contemporary Christian music must sound as bland and unoriginal as mainstream radio. The musicianship lacks imagination. Why, when guitarists run out of tricks, do they strive to sound like U2's harmonically driven Edge? There is a sense of joy, energy, excitement that generates through this live performance. But that leads to the essence of the problem here. There is no vulnerability, no individual voice given through the song. Not to say the songs need a solo singer, they have plenty in this performance, but there is a lack of personal identification with these songs. The production is muddy and unfocused leaving this reviewer wanting break into the studio and help with the mix. With a team of musicians, songwriters and vocalists who obviously have talent, one would hope future endeavors would hold more diversity, dimension and originality.
