Noise From Words

I have followed Michael McDermott’s music since 620 W. Surf, which goes back to the early '90’s. He is a singer-songwriter covering everything from pain, redemption, the barren wastelands of our souls, victory, and contemplation. He reminds me of Bill Mallonee, though of an entirely different mold.

“Noise From Words” marks his newest installment, and frankly, he just gets better with time. He is a tasteful acoustic guitarist, as with the opening song “Mess Of Things”. This is perfect over a cup of good coffee on a brisk autumn morning.

The music has always been of the Americana meets gritty rock and roll type. A perfect example of the hybrid shows through on his take on patriotism, “The American In Me”:
Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m wrong
Sometimes I go where I don’t belong
What’s liberty the history books are stained
Sometimes I’m proud, sometimes I’m so ashamed
Of the American in me
Don’t mistake dissent for disloyalty
It’s the American in me
This writer’s favorites are the aforementioned songs, plus “No Words”, though I say this with tongue in cheek. To me, Michael McDermott’s music should be heard while on a long drive with the windows open or fly fishing and soaking God’s goodness deep within. There is always a new gem to discover or twist in witnessing the nature unfolding before you.
