Mountain of Pieces
Artist: Stukenberg
Label: ©2008 Machine Records

Taking elements from a variety of sources, Stukenberg has crafted a sound and disc that resonates a strong maturity. It is hard to believe this is a debut, with the mastermind at the helm, David Stukenberg, being only 21. With a progressive folk rock style somewhat akin to Madison Greene, yet more mainstream, and a sense for creating unique, catchy songs, think Sufjan Stevens melding with Radiohead, their voice in the indie scene should only grow stronger.

The opening cuts “Don’t Mind” and “Fights” have a solid ‘70’s vibe complete with horn and harmonica that sends the listener down a meandering path of lighthearted and somber sentiment. Strong tracks abound making this release fluid throughout. Repeated listens are a must, not only because of the quality, but because you will probably eat this stuff up!

This Wisconsin-based five piece was recently nominated one of CMJ’s Top Ten finalists. Their sound has the wide-opened expanse of hippie/jam music, yet drifts effortlessly to a broader backwoods meeting the open mid-west.
