Caught In The Act Of Loving Him Artist: Servant Label: ©2006 Retroactive Records (original ©1983 Rooftop Records) www.servantband.com Servant’s Great American Album Giveaway Tour came to mind while I was reliving this album. I saw them with DeGarmo & Key with Randy Matthews opening. I think this shows my age. Servant was a traveling ministry band that used a combination of full pop rock orchestration with a light show that was a spectacle to behold. All of this was for the purpose of sharing the gospel of Christ. Looking back, their passion spoke volumes to me as a late high school/early college student. Listening to this now, I remember why friends used to tell me Christian rock was five years or more behind their secular counterparts. The truth is, if you were a church brat anything like me, your parents frowned on you listening to “secular” music. This was a healthy alternative that was an easier sell to your parents. It was clean, wholesome, and frankly, there were not that many Christian bands playing rock music at the time. The few bands we had caught on slowly in the church. I honestly believe the church was behind the times. This played a part in preventing the mentality of creating good rock music outside sacred circles. This reissue from Retroactive Records is appreciated for memory’s sake. The liner notes and Servant story were icing on the cake. The digitally re-mastered mix is solid, and the label gets kudos for putting out a historically significant release. Some memorable gems include “Now Is The Time”, “Tied Down”, “Holding On To You”, “Thank God”, and the closing track “Can’t Go Back”. Connections to the past are always fun to stumble upon. thecannyshark
