To Write On the Hearts of Others
Artist: Skywire
Label:Independent
Time: 40:39

The opening moment’s of Skywire’s debut album, To Write on the Hearts of Others, surprised me. From their self-proclaimed “post-hardcore rock” label, I expected a fury of sound. Instead, the moderately aggressive opening track featured spacey guitars and a prominent piano line. But this groove was soon interrupted by the screamo roots mentioned in their bio.

Now let me stop and make this clear: Skywire is a very talented band. I would compare them at their best moments to Incubus. Their musicianship is far above average. The songs are musically diverse and well played. Singer Nick Driver has a strong voice and the ability to adequately carry the many different styles the band incorporates.

But at times, Skywire attempts too many styles. Often beautiful grooves are interrupted by disconnected screams. Just when you think you have figured out what sound they are going for, along comes another song and another style. They are in many ways a band in search of a consistent sound.

Skywire needs to forget trying to live up to their genre descriptions and just make great music. They have talent to do whatever style they choose. But choosing a style will be vital to helping the band find the right audience.
