The
Crossing - June 2009
Another solid month of tunes
and cinema here...
Let's take a look at a few
select music items:
Dave Matthews Band - I haven't
been paying the Dave Matthews Band much attention for the past ten years,
so why now? Well, I know they are very good musicians and always have been,
their drummer Carter Beauford is certainly among the top, and I just saw
them perform two songs on the Jimmy Fallon show. These were inspired, high
energy songs performed with an edge that you can tell was obviously brought
on by the passing of their very talented saxophone player, LeRoi Moore.
He died last Summer as a result of complications brought on by an ATV accident
that happened months earlier. These new songs seemed to have more electric
guitar in them than ever and possibly this sound is a result of Moore's
passing where his noteable saxophone passages helped make the Dave Matthews
Band sound. Apparently Moore's most recent playing, captured in the studio
before he died, has made it on to the new album entitled Big Whiskey
and the Groogrux King. They tour all Summer long. Long may they ride...
Regina Spektor - She broke
thru a few years back with the album Begin to Hope. She sang the
song "The Call" at the end of the Prince Caspian movie. She plays piano
and she's quirky, weird and strange. She's her own person, a true free
spirit, probably a result of moving from her home country Russia at an
early age and moving to a strange and new country, the USA, eventually
landing in Brooklyn, NY. My pick for the most anticipated album of the
month. It'll be
interesting to see what
Regina does with this new album and where it may take her. Produced in
part by Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra fame who's
worked a lot with Tom Petty,
but also produced by David Kahne with Regina who both worked on the last
album. This new collection entitled Far out on the
23rd, should be well produced
and full of Regina's idiosyncratic sound and beautiful voice.
Wilco - Which Wilco will
show up? Jeff Tweedy and Wilco release their 7th album somewhat dubiously
entitled Wilco (The Album) Guess that answers that
question... They `are' still
called albums!! It's out on the 30th of this month. I'm getting the vibe
that it will be a cross between their most recent effort
Sky Blue Sky and
that album's two experimental predecessors Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
and A Ghost is Born. Which means we won't know what kind of Wilco
album this will be until
it actually shows up. But given the title...it's safe to assume it will
be quintessential Wilco. There's even a song called "Wilco".
Special guest includes Feist
of "1,2,3,4" fame. I thought Sky Blue Sky was a very good album
and is probably my favorite Wilco collection, so if Wilco (The
Album) can be anything
like that, the band will have succeeded again in my eyes. One of the top
American bands, Wilco continues to evolve and keep fans
guessing...

LYRICS of the MONTH:
Maybe the sun will shine
today
The clouds will blow
away
Maybe I won't feel so
afraid
I will try to understand
Either way
Maybe you still love me
Maybe you don't
Either you will or you
won't
Maybe you just need some
time alone
I will try to understand
Everything has its plan
Either way
I'm gonna stay
Right for you
Maybe the sun will shine
today
The clouds will roll
away
Maybe I won't be so afraid
I will understand everything
has its plan
Either way.
Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), the
song "Either Way" off the album Sky Blue Sky released in 2007.
See you in July...
