Time: 6 tracks/17 mins

Todd Kessler is a modern Folk Singer/Songwriter with influences as varied as Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, M. Ward, and David Gray.  He is a local Chicago artist who began singing and playing guitar at the age of twelve; and began composing soon after. Playing in bands in high school and college, Todd found his sound as a solo artist playing the local clubs and bars in Chicago and the surrounding area. Todd is a graduate from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana completing a degree in music theory & composition.

Todd has toured throughout parts of the Midwest including shows in New York City, San Francisco, and the famed Kibitz Room at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles. In 2005, Todd was named as a finalist in the VH1 Song of the Year Contest, Pop Category, and more recently had a song placed in the web-show "Prom Queen."

Backed by a five-piece band, Small Shiny Things, Todd sits on the fringes of so many genres, something that I am finding more common among the Folk crew.  They are mixing it up a lot more now. At one moment it is straight up Folk, and then another tracks opens with horns and turns into folk.  Despite the reviews I found regarding Todd’s music I was disappointed in this E.P.  I think I had greater expectations thinking that this will be something out of the ordinary.  You know how it is; you read up on an artist and come with a certain expectation, only to have them not met.  I think if I had just listened straight away I would have really liked this disc.  Just didn’t do “it” for me.  I listened to some of Todd’s earlier releases and I think they showcase Todd better.

Musically and production this release is not bad. There are six tracks in all, with 1 and 6 being unlisted instrumentals.  The rest is mostly well done Folk.  The highlight for me would have to be track 4, “Tomorrow.”  Just love the horns and the whole package on this one.

I couldn’t find Wyzguy records, except where it is mentioned in other articles.  You can find the album and E.P.s’ on iTunes, or buy the album off Todds Myspace.
