The Crossing - April 2010

The first thing you've gotta know this month is that Rush is going back on tour this summer and plan to play the entire Moving Pictures album for the first time in its entirety! Yes, that means "The Camera Eye" will actually be heard live for the first time ever alongside timeless classics such as "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight".  Check out the front page here for the Rush: Time Machine tour itinerary. You'll be glad you did. You can also check out news of the documentary: Rush: Beyond a Lighted Stage premiering on April 24th at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Second thing you gotta know is that it's April. Anytime April rolls around, you can bet on 3 things: 1. nice, pleasing, perhaps even soothing weather. 2. rock 'n roll and movies hitting the stores and multiplexes like its no-one's business and 3. right smack dab in the middle of it: Record Store Day. The one day a year when people who haven't been in record stores in decades should really get their asses to their local, indie record stores to check out all the awesome sales that are going on. It's the smart thing to do. Plus, Record Store Day falls on a Saturday so you have no excuse not to attend. It's a big deal for these small mom and pop stores and usually there's lots of food and live bands and general merriment to be had. You can NOT go wrong!

This link will take you to all the special Record Store Day releases. Much of it, but not all, is on vinyl. While there, look for a link regarding participating stores. You don't want to be caught at a non-participating store!

As I have already alluded to, this is a solid rock month. Natalie Merchant is back with her first new release in 7 years after doing the married/child-rearing thing and sets a treasure trove of nursery rhymes, lullabies and poetry to music with a large supporting cast of musicians. Should be interesting listening for long time fans of the former 10,000 Maniacs singer.

Avatar also gets its big DVD/Blu-ray release on Thursday, April 22nd. You can find out for yourself what all the fuss is about. The film is bound to suffer a bit without the 3D, maybe even a lot, but at least now, you can add it to your library and wait for those 3D flat screens to show up.
