The Crossing July/August
2010
Hold on to your hats, folks!
It's all here. Or, most of it's here. A lot of it is here! Everything that
will be coming out in the next couple of months, including this month and
yes, even last month. Not to mention what I missed last edition. It's chock
full of the artists you love, some of them you don't even know you love
yet and some you may not be particularly fond of. Passions will run wild,
opinions will fly and there will be equal parts cheers and jeers. Hopefully
more cheers. But open up your hearts and minds as well as your pocketbooks
and you never know what you will find. Sometimes you stick to the tried
and true and sometimes you've just got to try something that, for whatever
reason, you just don't think you'll dig. That's where the surprises come
in. Variety is the spice of Life and Life is the spice of variety. (I don't
know what that means either.) The point is, stick to what you know, sure,
but occasionally veer sharply into the unknown and check out some of the
artists you've been hearing about, reading about, your friends are telling
you about and discover some new audio companions.
So here's how this works:
you've got your tried and true `comfort food' artists, but then let's just
say you weren't familiar with The Arcade Fire, for example. If you were
to add The Arcade Fire to your repertoire, they might be the marshmallows
in your beverage. Then, let's say you add in Kings of Leon. They might
be your nutmeg. And, let's say, if you added Great Big Sea, they would
be your cinnamon. Or, it could be vice-versa. Great Big Sea would be the
nutmeg and the Kings would be the cinnamon. Perhaps you want to add a dollop
of Yeah Yeah Yeah's. That's understandable. They might be the honey. I
have no idea who might be the whipped cream. But, seems to me, you've got
a pretty tasty beverage here no matter how you shake it up, stir it up
or puree it. It's all in the ingredients. You could drink it with crushed
ice or cubes. You could drink it hot but then decide the temperature outside
is not conducive for a toasty drink. It is August after all. Hey, no matter.
That's what the SPICE is all about! Spice it up, that's the mantra.
You get the idea. There's
more than plenty here to choose from. Choose wisely and if you don't, just
choose again and start over.
There's also more here than
meets the eye. My advice: break down into small morsels and chew slowly
to get the most out of it. Or, to stick with the above metaphor, sip slowly
and savor all the choices Life has to offer.
All of the July releases
are left under the date they came out, even though they are technically
recently released.
Enjoy!

LYRICS of the MONTH:
In the suburbs I
I learned to drive
And you told me we'd
never survive
Grab your mother's keys
we're leaving
You always seemed so
sure
That one day we'd be
fighting
In a suburban war
Your part of town against
mine
I saw you standing on
the opposite shore
But by the time the first
bombs fell
We were already bored
We were already, already
bored
Sometimes I can't believe
it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe
it
I'm moving past the feeling
again
The kids want to be so
hard
But in my dreams we're
still screaming and running through the yard
When all of the walls
that they built in the seventies finally fall
And all of the houses
they build in the seventies finally fall
Meant nothing at all?
Meant nothing at all
It meant nothing
Sometimes I can't believe
it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe
it
I'm moving past the feeling
and into the night
So can you understand
Why I want a daughter
while I'm still young?
I want to hold her hand
And show her some beauty
Before all this damage
is done
But if it's too much
to ask, if it's too much to ask
Then send me a son
Under the overpass
In the parking lot we're
still waiting
It's already past
So move your feet from
hot pavement and into the grass
`Cause it's already past
It's already, already
past
Sometimes I can't believe
it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe
it
I'm moving past the feeling
again
I'm moving past the feeling
I'm moving past the feeling
In my dreams we're still
screaming
We're still screaming
We're still screaming.
The Arcade Fire, the title
track off the new album The Suburbs released this month.
