Through Songs I Was First Undone
Artist: Justin McRoberts
Label: Independent
Length: 10/43:12

Following in the footsteps of Matthew Sweet and Susannah Hoffs, Justin McRoberts has recorded a cover album of ten songs that have impacted him in various ways.  His heartfelt appreciation for the songs, their lyrics, and the craft of songwriting is apparent throughout this disc, even if he does alter the arrangements from time to time.

Like any cover album, some songs fare better than others: The Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” gets the acoustic treatment, and would be a great addition to McRoberts’ setlist.  “No One Is To Blame” (Howard Jones) is a standout, and “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” is faithful to the original, though possibly not quite as mournful.

“Freedom ‘90” by George Michael has been redone by several different artists, yet this version still manages to bring something fresh to it.  Toad the Wet Sprocket’s “Fly From Heaven” is perhaps a bit slow, and “Wildflower” is forgettable.

The real revelation here is Christina Aguilera’s “Stripped.”  McRoberts takes the title literally the song gets stripped down to its very basics, with just vocals and guitar.  The pathos of the lyrics takes on a new meaning:

I've waited a long time for this
It feels right now
Allow me to introduce myself
I want you to come a little closer
I'd like you to get to know me a little bit better
Meet the real me sorry you can't define me
Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole” is also well done, somewhat reminiscent of Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt.”

If you appreciate alternate versions of songs, or like to see what songs have influenced Justin McRoberts, this album is for you.
