Ethereal post rock can be that ever so gentle vehicle that lifts the listener to another realm. It's very easy to get lost in whatever capacity when lyrics are not part of the focus. It also helps when the music is that good.
 
My first true introduction to the post rock world came with Saxon Shore. After hearing a slew of worthy bands, I am convinced that given the right exposure, the post rock genre, if you want to call it that, could catch onto like a wildfire. Cincinnati’s Still Pioneers, though unclear how long in the trenches, has an endearing sound using delay, reverb, and effects galore.
 
Out of the box, “Sail To The Sun” takes the motif and develops it quickly, though under the surface throughout. “The Gloria II” gives a hauntingly subdued introduction, allowing the theme to swell a minute into it. Beautiful stuff, this is, gaining some punch halfway in. “Alexander” reminds me of The Choir’s Derri Daugherty and his ambient leanings from the late 80’s/early 90’s. “To Siege, To Conquer” plods along like a locomotive gaining momentum at its medium pace. “Offering” takes the listener back to a mellower drone sound-wise, but keeps one plugged in until the last gap.
 
This is very impressive for a freshmen disc. Pony up, if you’re so inclined. They will be playing Cornerstone 2010.
