Armoured Heart
Artist: Runaway City
Label: Vertusent

As “More Than This” bursts forth from my speakers and springs in to action, it's already clear that we're on to something special here. The debut album from North Carolina melodic rockers Runaway City is one to savour as 2010 reaches its end (sorry for the late review guys, my bad). Ten songs, full of meaty, yet easy-on-the-ear, definitively radio-radio alternative rock hooks makes this a record which stays with you long after the closing track “Daybreak” has faded, leaving you reaching for the repeat button.

One of the most pleasing things about Runaway City, a new name to my ears, is the way that truths about faith and identity are skilfully woven into the lyrics, whilst no compromise has been made on the quality of songwriting and musicianship. Coming off like a harder-edged Lifehouse, or a slightly leaner Creed, fronted by King David or one of the Old Testament prophets, Runaway City have greatly benefited from the production work of Jason Elgin (Collective Soul), whilst frontman Josh's voice is a versatile instrument, able to lead his band's songs to great heights.

Other highlights on this, an album of highlights, are the groove-based “Only You,” with its water-tight rhythm parts, and vertically-focused, fist-punping chorus, and and the anthemic “Lately” which crashes into life like the best radio rock song you've not heard yet.

Really, it's hard not to implore you, dear reader, to drop what you're doing right now and head on over to whichever music store or listening service is your weapon of choice and bless your ears and your soul with this great record. Go on, do it now.
