Australian  - December 1999 Pick of the Month

Into the Mirror
Artist: Simeon with Ivan Smith
Label: Independent
Length: 10 tracks/39:36 minutes

This is the first record of a very young but mature artist. With plenty of years to go and a few behind, Simeon has joined Ivan Smith and many other talented Melbourne (Australia) artists to release Into the Mirror, which will surely find him national, if not international, recognition.

The album takes its title from "Spinning World," which is about being broken by Christ and changing our lives around, by stepping 'into the mirror' and confessing our sinfulness. Simeon, who either wrote or co-wrote the majority of the songs, writes honest, Christian lyrics that are neither overly-complicated nor terribly simplistic. "Stealing Time," one of the two songs Ivan Smith wrote on his own, is a precious ballad and metaphor for the Father's love for us and the adoration he deserves from his children.

Into the Mirror opens with funky distorted electric guitars, backed up by a strong acoustic riff, a combination which is characteristic of the album. "Spinning World" quickly unfolds into a chorus that sticks in your head for days. Settling back on a more soulful note with "Close Your Eyes," the record springs into the acoustic pop/rock mold that defines much of the album. There isn't much variety, but the record certainly isn't tiring, and Simeon and band play their music with remarkable skill.

Paul Colman lent his experienced hand to the project, having produced the record and performed guitars, bass and keyboards throughout. He also lends backing vocals to a few tracks and helped write four of the songs. I wonder if it was his involvement, or just something in the Melbourne water, that made Simeon and band sound a LOT like Paul Colman. Even Simeon's vocals are strongly reminiscent of Colman's. For that reason, fans of Paul Colman will adore Into the Mirror

This is not only one of the best Australian albums of the year, it is one of the best debuts of the year. And to think it comes from the hard work of a handful of talented Melbourne artists. Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you're into indie music or acoustic pop/rock.
