Artist: Shona MacDonald Label: UK indie Time: 15 tracks/37.21 Now here's something a bit different. It is a recording of acappella Celtic music, a sort of highland plainsong, mixing psalms and songs based on Bible verses and ending with a rendition of the popular hymn "Be Thou My Vision." Shona has a wonderful, very clear voice which carries the melodies well. The use of a full studio has allowed her to overlay her own harmonies also. This, mixed with a strong Scottish accent, makes for some beautiful moments. The build-up of many, many vocal layers on track three, "Psalm 86 - Coleshill," is very effective. Also, starting with sections from Job's lament in Job 19, the verses chosen for lyrics show a good mixture of moods and work very well. Unfortunately, the whole album is a bit more than I can cope with in one sitting. While the vocals are excellent, I think Shona would have more success were she accompanied by a band or at least some percussion. Also, in places the harmonies come in a little suddenly, and some of the arrangements could do with some tightening up. Despite those reservations, this is still an interesting and different album. |
