“The End of Oak Street” is an apt title for a road map or a magazine article or a book. In this rather tongue-in-cheek science fiction film by Director/Scriptwriter David Robert Mitchell, we have a piece of Earth property leaving this planet. “Hmm, you wonder, what is next? You would be surprised. Anne Hathaway has the starring role of Denise, the housewife who begins to piece things together as to what is happening to them, especially concerning a heavy storm. Ewan McGregor (Greg) has a secret he is hiding from his wife. Hmm
We begin the tale with a storm that wrecks havoc in Flowervale, Michigan. People start to get suspicious when they figure out the landscape has changed and they are no longer on Oak Street, but in dinosaur-age and run for your life. Their daughter, Maisy (Audrey Platt) figures things out—there is a newly created wormhole and that’s why they no longer live in Michigan. Family dog can't figure this out either. What to do? Dodge ancient creatures for one, try to figure out when the next worm hole will appear and just where. Plus, most of all, avoid being eaten by something very large and noisy. It is a puzzlement.
If this film has a familiar ring, it is similar to an "Outer Limits" television episode of several years ago when a piece of Earth was transported to another planet and the people taken were to be used as slaves. “The End of Oak Street” has a touch of dry humor here, though, Acting is well done, especially between Anne Hathaway and husband Ewan McGregor when he reveals a secret.
The background of prehistoric times fits well with houses and barbecue. There is enough action to keep the plot moving and the actors create an atmosphere of “what do we do next?” Survival is the key word here and what would you do if you woke up to growling outside of your house and the roof begins to shake violently. I bet even Al would not have an answer.
